Not for the faint of heart, but not as bad as one would expect
I was gifted this fragrance a few months back, after telling one of my good friends that I was looking for something leathery and animalic. I was initially hoping for something more like Antaeus or Kouros, but to my surprise I received this. After the first spray, I was almost knocked to the ground. This scent is potent, and most definitely not for the faint of heart. The opening is strangely appealing, but very weird. The hazelnut is oddly prominent, but I also get the smell of gunpowder upon first spray which really had me turned off at first. The Carner Barcelona website has absinthe listed as one of the top notes, and I believe that might be what I'm smelling. The civet also rears its head right off the bat, and its intense, likely one of the most intense civet notes I've smelled, but it's weirdly not that bad and it honestly helps balance the other notes out really well. As it dries, it changes form completely. The leather note swoops in and wipes the entire opening portion of the scent out in exchange for vanilla and resin notes. What we're left with at the end is an amalgamation of the resins, vanilla and leather that has an icky, dirty feeling to it, but weirdly enough, it all works, and meshes together shockingly well. Perhaps this is an example of fragrance as an art?
However interesting it may be, I do find it to be unwearable. This is such a potent scent that even the smallest spray fills an entire room, and despite the fact that it does smell pretty good, this is certainly one that the majority of people aren't going to like. I have a hard time imagining an occasion where this could be worn without accidentally offending someone, as it's ridiculously strong. So needless to say, performance is not an issue in any regard here. Overall though, I don't know if I could recommend this scent. I do think it would be worth getting in a decant, and by no means is this a foul or gross fragrance, I've certainly smelled worse, but it is an odd one. I'm glad to have it as a part of my collection, but I can't say I'll wear it too much.
