Ah, tonka beans.
Either you love them or you don’t.
I, for one, think tonka beans are great, as this note often makes many fragrances powdery-soft with a pleasantly gentle-sweet scent and sometimes even a bit milky. Especially when combined with vanilla, it creates a dream team that is hard to resist, with the only downside being that this dream team tends to smell the same or at least similar in most fragrances wherever they appear.
Well, I don’t find that too bothersome as long as the scent itself is well made. Here in Tonka by Commodity, there’s no vanilla, but instead almonds, which also combine very well with tonka beans and smell just as wonderful. The only downside here is that tonka and almond together often come across as rather feminine and therefore can only be worn by you ladies… *sigh* Recently, the 100,000th fragrance was added here on Parfumo. I bet 90,000 of those fragrances are just for you ladies… *sigh again* :D
Anyway, let’s get to the scent!
The scent:
At first, I smell a milky almond note that is sweet and intense, giving off a lovely fragrance. I think you can already smell the tonka bean, which pairs very well with the almond. The cardamom is quite noticeable, so I personally hope it loses strength quickly, as I don’t particularly like this note. Here, it bothers me with its penetrating and very peculiar scent and seems, in my opinion, to clash with the otherwise beautiful, sweet, and powdery creamy notes.
A little later, you can still smell the cardamom, but thankfully it weakens as desired, allowing the sweet-soft notes like tonka and almond to come back to the forefront. In the heart note, I’m unsure about the magnolias, but I think I can at least smell the lotus for a short time, which I find nice.
However, most of the notes blend with the strong tonka beans and almonds, so these two notes remain the most intense (towards the end, the tonka bean is the strongest note). And from the base, gentle sandalwood joins in, but it also stays a bit in the background.
The sillage and longevity:
I find the projection good, as the scent will be noticeable even from a short distance. I even think that the fragrance could be quite room-filling if you overdo the dosage.
As expected, a fragrance with tonka and almond lasts quite a long time, really very, very long. Because I could still smell it a bit the next morning even after showering!
The bottle:
The bottle is cylindrical, has a milky glass, and is filled with yellowish fragrance liquid. The label is gray, and the name of the fragrance is written prominently on it. The cap is cylindrical and chrome-plated. All in all, it looks a bit sterile-simple, but it’s still okay.
Well, aside from the slightly peculiar start due to the cardamom, the fragrance smells beautifully of almonds and sweet tonka beans. This makes the scent very soft and powdery. Due to the sweetness, which here is especially feminine because of the almonds, I think the fragrance suits women better than men.
For me, the scent is an autumn and winter fragrance, as it is very sweet and could feel heavy on warm days. Due to its good sillage (and of course the pleasant scent), it is very suitable for going out and belongs once again to the fragrances that make a lady smell simply "delicious," with which I could once again write at length something about "biting," but this time I’ll refrain from it… for once… :D
Yes, you should give this fragrance a try, and don’t let the peculiar beginning deter you if you don’t like cardamom as much as I do, because this note noticeably fades over time!
