A Sun-Kissed Mediterranean Daydream
Kitrea is a fragrance that cannot be easily classified. While it would seem that the bright citrus and marine notes are indicative of a conventionally conceived summer aquatic, the addition of honey and beeswax makes it unexpectedly complicated and just that little bit interesting. It's fresh yet comforting, energizing and gently sweet.
It is especially versatile and can be worn during the day in warm weather but it also exhibits a warmth and gentle sensuality that makes it shift easily to a soft evening scent. If you are looking for a fragrance that captures the joyous energy of the Mediterranean while retaining an artisanal and natural aesthetic

Fruit Salad from Molecular Cuisine?
Strange. A more general search for the name of the fragrance leads me to the Polish Wikipedia, to a place in the northern part of Cyprus, which is referred to as Kythrea in the German version. Google Translate wants to recognize the name as a Swahili word, but it has no translation available. And according to the manufacturer, the fragrance refers to the "Flight of the Bumblebee," a popular piece from the otherwise (at least here) largely unknown opera "The Tale of Tsar Saltan" by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. Not even Valery Gergiev and his Mariinsky troupe have recorded the work - and they have truly done justice to some of the lesser-known pieces of the Russian repertoire over the past decades.

The aforementioned "Flight of the Bumblebee" is briefly touched upon in a piano arrangement when accessed on the provider's page. Thus, a composition by a master of orchestral colors is literally forced into black and white. All very puzzling. I wonder what the perfumer conjures from this…?

A chemically aquatic-marine opening with a vanilla-anise touch, reminiscent of baking aroma. The indication of 'honey' also hints at the source of the biting sweetness. A solitary, brave lemon is struggling mightily. 'Fruits'? That would then be especially one particular fruit, beyond the already suggested 'melon.' Namely, Maria's special new breed 'Helione.'

And since we're already on "with -one": The main role in today's molecular cuisine is likely to be played by 'Calone,' because in the breeze that swells to dominance throughout the morning, I increasingly mourn my anise thought. At least it doesn't become brackish - that's something. Perhaps vanilla amber helps (*reference*) a corresponding creaminess and sweetness can be diagnosed. Now I'm still waiting for the beeswax. Uh, wait: bee? I thought we were talking about bumblebees! Whatever, I’m waiting in vain anyway. Honey, however, as a source of sweetness in the afternoon somehow makes sense again. I always find it difficult to perceive other things nuanced under this sea stuff, and the fact that the evening ebb today reveals a distinct musk base is a weak consolation. Therefore, such things are also…

(Conclusion:) …not my area of expertise. But at least the fragrance is quite wearable, as it doesn’t turn brackish.

I thank Yatagan for the sample.

Hummelflight over the Sea
Kitrea from the "Hummel" series, inspired by the music of Rimsky-Korsakov, starts with a licorice/root note... seemingly evoked by the blend of lemon with bergamot and honey (myrtle?) that I already know from another fragrance. There is also a hint of melon (melonal? calone?). Underpinned by salted honey, Kitrea surprisingly remains unsweetened in this opening phase, to say the least, slightly bitter. Pleasant! The fruits that follow have a certain stringency that reminds me of dried fruits. This may be due to the salted honey from the opening phase mixing with the fruits at this point, managing to avoid slipping into sweetness again in the heart note. Great job, and when the ambre gris (mentioned on the MCG website) joins in the base note, it creates an impression of sea breeze on the (mid-) sea during a walk in good weather.

Conclusion: Stylistically and also price-wise, it lies between Hyle (more like the oppressive hot wind at the gray sea before the storm comes) and 40 Knots (a nobly elegant aquat that evokes thoughts of vacation on an expensive yacht with landings at equally expensive docks)

Genre: Music interpretation fragrance

For: All occasions, ladies/gents 60/40

Sillage: rather close to the skin after a short time

Longevity: easily 6 hours

Alternatives: Hyle by Farmacia S.S Annuziata (8.5 for me)
Join the club - 40 Knots by Xerjoff (7.5 for me)

Feeling nice and young with this floral/marine scent. The heart note, geranium, is pleasent and inoffensive. Slightly sweet after a bit.

Sour cucumber water with a hint of licorice.
Turns into a sunscreen scent (I think it's the amber). Not for me

Unripe fruits sunk in sweet wax with a splash of lemon. Overall, it feels unique and has a pastel-creamy green impression.

Watery green with citrus notes refined. This green aquatic seems tolerably synthetic to me, but it doesn't grab me.

Maria Candida Gentile: as quirky as ever, charming as usual, this lady! Fruit salad with lemon juice and honey. I like this logic.

Those who have already fallen in love with Mimosa Pour Moi by L'Artisan will also enjoy Kitrea - as a hesperidic green twin.

Sigh... Maria's fresh scents all have the same sweet-salty note. It doesn't say anything to me, does nothing for me. What a shame.
