The Most Beautiful Bottle in the World
Many people set limits for themselves on what they consider acceptable to spend on a product - even if their financial means allow for more. And one such product group is, of course, perfume - what one person finds trivial, another might consider excessive. The segment above one thousand euros is perceived as extravagant by most, some might even find it obscene. With Guerlain's Flacon Tortue - assuming the monetary context - I would have no scruples at all.
This is the most beautiful perfume masterpiece I know. If the good (and generous) perfume fairy were standing here in front of me and granted me any wish - or if I were to come into some money - one of the forty-seven produced crystal bottles would be mine. I am not a fan of things 'for good' that are locked away in display cases and never used. I like functional and consumable items, and the wonderful interior of Guerlain's little turtle also brightened up a Tuesday for me, so why not?
I was able to smell its golden belly in Paris, at the Maison Guerlain, 28 Avenue des Champs-Élysées, up an elegantly winding staircase to the first floor. They are not stingy there with their treasures, and if you dare to pass by the uniformed guards into those rooms where they keep 'Les Pièces d'Exception' in mirrored shelves - some of them even far more expensive than 'La Tortue' - you can try them out just like any other perfume. And of course, you can buy them too.
The bottle - handmade by Baccarat - is heavy as a brick and quite impractical to handle, as you have to draw the perfume with a pipette (which is at least included in the package). Inside is a euphoric floral scent of warm golden opulence - around its floral heart, a shimmering, light sweetness like ambrosia. There is a density and delicacy in its aromas captured like a southern summer breeze - immortelle and osmanthus only briefly, while the delicately bitter-bronze vanilla is all the more present. And beautiful.
Conclusion: 60 ml in the Baccarat turtle costs 9,500 euros. If you calculate 2 ml for each use of the perfume, I can perfume myself from the Flacon Tortue thirty times, which makes 317 euros each time - and the crystal bottle comes with it. What am I actually waiting for?
