Magnificent Hidden Gem
Scentrack: Hindi Zahra – Un Jour

From the beginnings of the fragrance community there is a persistent tendency for starting a hype train. Several YouTube reviewers were known for (un)successful hype train creations. Successful hype trains are usually like an atomic fission chain reaction, and soon the whole community is overwhelmed with reviews of the same fragrance. Unfortunately, hype trains are often unjustified and just a tool for gaining some kind of prestige within the community. Personally, I consider hype trains as a childish attempt to present a fragrance as a universal “lady killer”, “panty dropper”, “compliment getter” etc. In my humble opinion, love for a certain fragrance is strictly a personal act. A manifestation of my personality or a current state within the fragrant molecules.
What is the reason of this prologue? Maybe a possible try to start my own hype train, the first and last, after I sniffed and bought Proraso Wood and Spice. Not to create my own energetic pendulum as Vadim Zeland claims, just to pinpoint that one could find a beautiful fragrance creation on totally unexpected place. Mysterious are the ways of perfumery.
Finally, how does it smell? Wood and Spice are the beautiful hybrid of classic Italian colonia genre and contemporary Oriental tendencies in perfumery. For an Eau de Cologne, this creation is rather strong and long lasting. The main player is the saffron note, combined with gentle, yet dirty cumin note. This cumin note gives a typical Oriental dissonance, off putting to some. The spicy part of the fragrance is combined with woody part, made of cedar and very polite darker oud accord or a touch of Guaiac wood. Beneath all, one could sense some gentle amber-like bottom, which is somehow muted with the oud or maybe the source of this oud mirage. Interesting is the very faint green violet leaf which combined with this amber reminds me of Narciso Rodriguez for Him. However, Wood and Spice reminds me more of Lubin Idole or Bentley for Him Absolute due to the strong saffron note. Sweet and woodsy part strongly reminds me of Calvin Klein Obsessed Absolute. Additionally, it possesses some distant Oriental echo of Laudano Nero.
Spice and Wood is a fairly linear and somehow rough fragrance, but successfully satisfies my need for cliché niche Oriental fragrances like Idole, Laudano Nero or even long gone M7. There is plenty of good news here, but the bad news is that is probably discontinued. Grab it now, and you will thank me later.

Modern Barbershop with Design Flaws
It was one of those small changes in everyday routines that, in retrospect, gave a significant boost to my way of life, and whose reversal now seems all the more impossible, as a whole series of other changes-small, even the smallest-have attached themselves to that one change in coping with existence, which now, like coupled freight cars, forms a whole of considerable gravity and mutual dependence. In short: About two and a half years ago, I shaved for the first time.

That is to say, I had regularly removed my facial hair before, of course. Initially with an electric razor (from Braun, received for my sixteenth birthday, an initiatory experience), then for more than ten years with various cartridge system razors (Gillette Mach 3, 4, 5; Wilkinson Sword 3D, 4D, 5D, etc.) - and I thought that was that. That’s how one shaves. However, for reasons that can be reconstructed afterwards, but do not belong here, and from a somewhat obscure will to form that suddenly expanded, I found myself one day standing in front of the bathroom mirror with a traditional safety razor, a bowl of shaving soap, and a synthetic bristle shaving brush. And it was wonderful! An unknown thorough, satisfying shaving result! Not comparable to the annoying tugging and pulling of past decades! I was shaved for the first time. But not only the result, also the experience was what thrilled me: The almost meditative, calmly preparatory and post-preparatory sequence of necessary hand movements only took time on the clock face, for in truth it formed a period, gave it quality and "taste," which had previously only been half-heartedly to reluctantly linked to the regular shower routine: Canned foam on the face, scrape, scrape, scrape, quickly rinsing off the foam remnants. "Convenient," but basically annoying. However, all of a sudden, I had actually reclaimed fifteen minutes for myself (!) on three weekdays, which in a bourgeois society must be considered a medium-sized triumph. Flowers and congratulatory notes please to my mailbox.

Contributing to this oasis-like comfort from the very beginning were the excellently scented shaving soaps from Proraso, an old Italian company for barber products of all kinds, whose product design still evokes the eternal 50s Italian summer; one wants to rejoice. After I also lost my untouched 30cm beard (model "Nordmann rustic") in the following months, as I exchanged it at the downtown barber for 5cm of the "Cardinal Richelieu" model, the need for beard care products grew. And also with oils and balms, the diligent brand from Fiesole in Florence emerged again: Good care properties with tasteful olfactory coordination and at the same time very human pricing! Especially "Wood and Spice" appealed to me excellently from the beginning: A rather robustly balanced, but very harmonious triad of menthol freshness, woody masculinity, and warming sweetness. And even though my image of a barbershop scent signature has changed and deepened significantly since my entry into the Parfumo order, I still consider "Wood and Spice" a successful update of the old barbershop theme. At least as long as it’s not about the cologne from the line...

I don’t know if Proraso significantly altered the composition of the fragrance notes in the perfume version of "Wood and Spice," or if simply the oily or balmy "carrier mass" is missing, which is responsible for the balanced and high-quality scent impression of the other products in this line, but somehow the aforementioned balance in this cologne has gone a bit out of whack: The sweetness takes over shortly after spraying and robs the very mentholated mint of the beard oil of its caring freshness, which shifts the overall impression more towards Wrigley’s Spearmint (the fragrance notes mention "violet leaf" - it may be that; "violet candy" would be more accurate). Besides, the wood, which is actually so cleanly integrated, suddenly appears comparatively dry, prickly, and distinctly synthetic. Also, the missing scent progression (which is certainly not a flaw in cosmetic products) suddenly annoys a bit here, even if this finding may be objectively unfair.

"Wood and Spice Cologne" is certainly not a misstep in itself, but it seems a bit like a second-rate product compared to its colleagues. Therefore, my recommendation for the bearded among you: Instead, try either the namesake beard oil or (if you prefer a three-day beard) the "Balsamo cura barba." Both convey significantly more quality and radiate almost as long and intensely as the cologne - at a lower price. Have I actually already done enough advertising for Proraso products?

I Shall Stand Up for Proraso

Proraso!
A man does not speak this name without a certain reverence. Especially the man who shaves.
And no one has commented on this Proraso scent???
Shame on you, gentlemen!!! .-) .-)

First, allow me to correct the statement above: the production has apparently been discontinued.
That is not true! Sorry, esteemed forum management.... :-)
This scent is also listed on the Proraso website, albeit a bit hidden!
One logically searches under "Products" - Ha! - but not at Proraso (grin), one must click on PRO, then scroll down to the bottom right to: SPECIAL RANGES FOR BARBER SHOP
and voilà, one finds the "yellow" series. Following the motto: Why do it simply when it can also be complicated. Um.... .-)
Here is what was first "absorbed" by Google Translate and then inserted here:
Proraso dedicates Single Blade to the experienced hands of skilled and precise professionals with a single blade, paying attention to product quality. A line with distinctive formulas and scents, featuring rich and full-bodied textures that support the ritual of traditional shaving through special offerings.
TEXTURE
The products in the line are characterized by a rich and full-bodied consistency, specially developed to enable a smooth shave with one blade and comfort after shaving, as well as pleasant efficacy in beard care.
FRAGRANCES
Three scents: Wood and Spice, Azur Lime, and Cypress & Vetiver enliven three different lines with notes of precious woods, the freshness of citrus fruits, and the harmonious enjoyment of cedar and vetiver.

Well - and I want to briefly describe the "Wood & Spice" Cologne.
A grippy, crystal-clear, angular spray bottle with the obligatory 100ml content.
But what a content.
I have been a convinced and above all satisfied consumer of Proraso products for so many years.
Just take the shaving soap, a dream in terms of scent but especially in terms of lathering results.
In shaving forums, as already mentioned, Proraso is almost spoken of as "sacred."
The care products and barber accessories are countless, all truly deserving the label Excellent.

Now one has acquired a Cologne with "Wood & Spice," whose scent has blown me away.
I must note: Somewhere I have already sniffed this scent combination - the experts here in the forum would surely know which one I might mean when testing the scent - unfortunately, I can't recall. I would describe the first impression as wonderfully warm. Woody-spicy-sweet, that certainly hits the mark.
I did NOT use the scent after shaving. I applied it later. Whether it can also be used as an aftershave is beyond my knowledge. I prefer to use (just to be safe .-) ) the Proraso aftershave balm.
For nothing is more unpleasant to me than to further irritate the stressed skin after wet shaving.
Shaving serves me for relaxation, it has never been (annoying) duty but always "pleasure."
For a Cologne, it has enormous staying power. For me, around 6 hours.
I do enjoy the scent that wood of any kind, especially freshly worked, exudes. Wood is for me a "living being" that gives us humans so much! It's a pity that we often only burn it. But what can be made from wood and with wood is endless. Our life is unimaginable without the raw material wood.
I not only enjoy working with wood privately.
And this woody-warm, slightly sweet scent accompanies me with this Cologne (almost) all day long.
Applied a bit earlier on the wrist, and one inevitably keeps sniffing at that spot,
at least I do.
In the statements, a "cheap note" or too much vanilla is mentioned. This is subjective perception.
I cannot confirm these statements!

Once again, the good reputation of Proraso is confirmed for my perception.

PS - If the scent "Wood & Spice" does not appeal to you - there are many other options available.

What a noble piece
After indulging in my favorite pastime some time ago and seeking new impressions on Parfumo for new "blind buys," I became aware of Proraso -Wood and Spice-. It is said to have a mild resemblance to Black Afgano. Unfortunately, I do not (yet) own the Nasomatto and have not been able to sniff it so far. I purchased it online for a good price and held the nice, simple bottle in my hand. Well, I thought,... the label was not centered. No matter, if the inner values are right. I sprayed a good amount on my wrist from the EDC. After a few minutes, this fragrance revealed its secret, and I was impressed and surprised by its spicy scent with pleasant woody notes. For an EDC, it lasts a good two hours on me before it dissipates (the only drop of bitterness,... it can be forgiven). Sillage is about two meters, and it's an incredible compliment-getter like no other. Since it is an inexpensive EDC, one can always reapply as needed without worrying about it being -overdosed-. In my opinion, it is absolutely worth a blind buy, and I have already stocked up on a small supply of it. Many thanks to the entire Parfumo community; otherwise, this little masterpiece would probably have remained hidden from me...

Sandalwood Introduction
Anyone who has dealt with scents and the corresponding effects of various aromas and fragrances knows that sandalwood can have an almost magical effect on the female sex. Just as annoying as burdocks, they cling to one in their fascination with the sandalwood aroma. We know this. I also like sandalwood. I have always liked it since my first visit to an Indian shop with fragrance oils in 5ml containers in Vienna in the mid-80s of the last century. Only over the years and with the upcoming 50th birthday have I distanced myself from burdocks and the search for compliments from the female sex.
I wasn't looking for this Proraso. I bought it because of the price and my knowledge of the traditional company. 100 ml discounted for 10€. Nothing can go wrong, I thought. And indeed, it didn't. I find the top note penetrating, just like the sillage. The spell lasts not even an hour, and then a wonderful sandalwood with a hint of cedar and a memory of vanilla lies on my skin. So grand that I am constantly tempted to smell myself. For this low price, I can recommend the scent to any man who simply wants to smell good for himself. It would be highly interesting if TFord just bottled it and threw it on the market with "Sandal Pure Extrem" or "Be Yourself in the Woods"... YouTube would be bowing down in admiration...

Modest cross between Gucci's Intense Oud and Valentino V/Daarej. Lovely blend of cedar and sweetness, but barely any spice. Sexy AF though.

This is a nice scent. Reminds me very much of black afgano without the hash note. For me average longevity and sillage but that is ok

It's a gem! Close to the Black Afgano, even though it is not a perfect clone, it has the same vibe. Clean and very good for the office.

[I have the aftershave balm] Dark spicy sandalwood with (I'm sure) a hint of rose later on. Lasted hours. Great scent for the price.

The Barber of Seville... Rossini would have worn it. Distinct, dense, woody, and divine not-too-sweet vanilla in the dry down.
Compliment magnet AF

Ordered the Cologne directly from the barber for the first time. It's been my signature scent for a year. Fresh, woody, masculine, and not everyone has it.
